Retaining Wall Cleaning — Remove Moss, Stains & Efflorescence

Calibrated PSI for every wall type — concrete block, natural stone, brick, poured concrete.

Retaining Wall Cleaning That Won't Damage the Structure

Retaining walls accumulate some of the most stubborn staining of any exterior surface — efflorescence (white salt deposits), moss and lichen embedded into mortar joints, rust stains from rebar oxidation, and years of soil and organic buildup. Cleaning them requires careful PSI calibration: enough pressure to remove the growth and staining without dislodging mortar or damaging the wall face. Willow Wash adjusts our approach based on material, age, and condition of every wall we clean.

Service Details

Wall Types We Clean

01

Concrete Block Walls

High-efficiency cleaning for CMU block retaining walls — removes efflorescence, algae, and organic staining without damaging block faces.

02

Natural Stone Walls

Careful soft-to-moderate pressure approach for fieldstone, granite, and limestone — preserves mortar joints and stone character.

03

Poured Concrete

Surface cleaner cleaning for poured concrete walls. Addresses algae, rust streaking, and atmospheric discoloration.

04

Brick Retaining Walls

Moderate PSI with targeted efflorescence treatment. We protect mortar joints while restoring brick face color.

How It Works

Our Retaining Wall Cleaning Process

1

Wall Condition Assessment

We inspect for loose mortar, structural cracks, or compromised sections before any cleaning begins.

2

Targeted Pre-Treatment

Efflorescence treatments, moss/lichen solutions, or degreasers are applied based on the specific staining present.

3

Calibrated Pressure Washing

PSI is set specifically for the wall material and condition — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

4

Mortar Joint Inspection

After cleaning, we check that all mortar joints are intact and flag any areas that may need repointing.

Why Choose Willow Wash

What Sets Us Apart

  • PSI Calibration by Material

Old brick and stone need lower PSI than new CMU block. We never guess — we calibrate to the wall in front of us.

  • Efflorescence Specialists

White salt deposits (efflorescence) require specific chemical treatment, not just pressure. We carry the right products for it.

  • Mortar-Safe Technique

We work with mortar joints, not against them. Improper pressure washing is a leading cause of premature mortar failure in retaining walls.

  • Licensed, Insured, Guaranteed

Fully licensed and insured. Satisfaction guarantee on every cleaning job.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about our exterior cleaning services across the Bay Area.

Efflorescence is the white, chalky salt deposit that appears on concrete and brick surfaces when water moves through the material and evaporates, leaving mineral salts behind. We use targeted acid-based treatments that dissolve and remove efflorescence effectively.
Not with proper technique. We calibrate our PSI to the wall material and age. Older walls with original mortar get lower PSI than newer block walls. We check mortar joint integrity before and after.
Yes. Moss and lichen embedded in retaining wall joints require a two-stage approach: chemical treatment to kill the organisms, then mechanical removal. One-pass pressure washing without treatment will just shear off the surface growth while leaving roots embedded.
PSI varies by material: new CMU block can handle 2,500–3,000 PSI. Old natural stone or brick with original mortar may need 1,200–1,800 PSI. We assess and calibrate on-site.
Most retaining wall cleanings run $150–$400 depending on wall length, height, material, and amount of growth. We provide free on-site estimates.
Yes. Natural stone walls are typically older and have softer mortar. We use lower PSI and more solution-based cleaning for stone. Concrete block can handle higher PSI and different chemistry for efflorescence.
We typically clean the visible facing side. If access allows and you'd like the back cleaned as well, let us know during the estimate.
Absolutely — and it's often more efficient to combine jobs. We offer bundled pricing when cleaning multiple surfaces in the same visit.
